We are committed to thoughtful design, reliable manufacturing and products that balance functionality with aesthetics.
We believe great ideas become stronger through collaboration and work closely with customers to help bring their ideas to life.
Michael Alabi, PhD, PMP — Founder, AddiTechLab.
Michael Alabi, PhD, PMP is the founder of AddiTechLab. With a background in Computer Engineering, Engineering Management, research, and project management, Michael brings together a passion for technology, creativity, and practical problem-solving.
His journey into additive manufacturing began during his postgraduate studies in South Africa, where a university assignment involving desktop 3D printers introduced him to the possibilities of 3D printing technology. What started as a simple academic responsibility quickly developed into a deeper interest in how additive manufacturing could support education, product development, entrepreneurship, and industry.
That curiosity eventually influenced his doctoral research, provided opportunities for hands-on exposure to both desktop and industrial additive manufacturing technologies, and introduced him to environments where ideas could be transformed into physical products.
Years later, after relocating to Canada, that early experience and long-held vision became the foundation for AddiTechLab. Today, Michael combines his engineering and additive manufacturing background with professional project management experience to guide AddiTechLab’s continued development.
Michael’s journey into additive manufacturing began during his Master of Engineering studies at North-West University in South Africa. While his master’s research focused on Lean Manufacturing, an unexpected university assignment introduced him to a technology that would eventually become an important part of his academic and entrepreneurial journey.
During the second year of his master’s program, he was given responsibility for assessing desktop 3D printers located across campus offices and laboratories, documenting their operating condition and identifying equipment requiring maintenance.
Rather than simply completing the assignment, Michael became curious about how the technology worked. He spent time with technical staff at the Faculty of Engineering’s fabrication laboratory, learned the fundamentals of desktop FDM 3D printing, explored digital models, downloaded his first STL files, and produced his first objects using white filament.
He later supported the deployment of five desktop 3D printers to another university campus, helping set up the printers and provide introductory staff training. What began as a simple assignment had become a genuine interest in additive manufacturing.
Early Exposure to 3D Printing. A representation of the desktop technology that formed part of Michael’s early exposure to additive manufacturing during postgraduate studies in South Africa.
Michael continued his academic journey at North-West University, pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Engineering Management. His doctoral research focused on the integration of 3D printing technology into STEM education within South African universities.
As part of this journey, he spent four months as a doctoral research intern at the Advanced Manufacturing Precinct (AMP) at Vaal University of Technology. This marked a transition from primarily working with desktop printers to a broader industrial additive manufacturing environment.
His exposure included technologies such as Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Stereolithography (SLA), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), material jetting, and metal additive manufacturing, helping him understand how additive manufacturing could support prototyping, product development, research, and industrial manufacturing.
During this period, Michael was also introduced to the Idea2Product (I2P) Lab concept—an environment where students, researchers, entrepreneurs and surrounding communities could learn about 3D printing and transform ideas into physical products.
The I2P concept made a lasting impression. It represented more than access to machines—it demonstrated the potential of creating an environment where ideas, design, technology, entrepreneurship and manufacturing could come together.
That experience planted the seed for a future venture that could help individuals and organizations move from idea to design, from design to prototype, and ultimately from prototype to product.
In late 2019, Michael relocated from South Africa to Canada. Establishing a new life and building his professional career meant the vision had to be placed on hold, but the idea was never forgotten. Over the following years, he continued developing professional experience in project and technology delivery while carrying forward the lessons of his additive manufacturing journey.
In 2024, Michael established AddiTech Inc., a name inspired by Additive Manufacturing Technology. From this foundation, AddiTechLab was developed as the company’s additive manufacturing brand and officially began operations in January 2025.
Starting Small, Thinking Bigger. AddiTechLab began with FDM additive manufacturing and a deliberate decision to start with products that could become part of people’s everyday lives.
Modern home décor, organization solutions and everyday essentials provided a practical way to introduce products to customers, test ideas, learn customer preferences and continuously improve design and manufacturing processes. AddiTechLab products began reaching customers across Canada and internationally.
From the beginning, however, the broader vision extended beyond the product shop. Today, AddiTechLab continues building from its FDM foundation while developing capabilities in custom 3D printing, product development, prototyping, functional parts and digital 3D designs.
AddiTechLab Today. FDM additive manufacturing in action as we continue building our capabilities one product, one project, and one idea at a time.
What began with an early introduction to desktop 3D printing has grown into a vision for a company that brings together design, additive manufacturing, sustainability, and practical problem-solving.
Today, our manufacturing capabilities are primarily focused on FDM technology, but our vision extends beyond where we are today. As AddiTechLab grows, we aim to progressively expand our capabilities and explore additional additive manufacturing technologies, including SLA, SLS, and other advanced manufacturing processes.
Our goal is to serve an increasingly diverse range of customers—from individuals and makers to entrepreneurs, startups, educational institutions, businesses, and industrial organizations.
We envision AddiTechLab as more than a place where products are printed. We are building a platform where customers can bring an idea, a challenge, or a design and work collaboratively with us toward a practical manufacturing solution.
Michael’s professional project management experience also contributes to this vision. As AddiTechLab takes on increasingly complex projects, we aim to combine technical capabilities with structured planning, communication, collaboration, and project execution.
From a university assignment involving desktop 3D printers in South Africa to building an additive manufacturing business in Canada, the journey has been shaped by curiosity, learning, persistence, and a belief in the possibilities of additive manufacturing.
We are starting with what we have today while building toward the capabilities of tomorrow.
Whether you’re looking for thoughtfully designed products or need support turning an idea into a physical product, AddiTechLab is ready to explore what’s possible with you.
